With special consideration and needed Replacement or Repair Parts, old Lamps can be made functional again.
Table Lamps without shades can have tripod or ring holders added, to hold shades in a multitude of styles. Wall Brackets with or without reflectors will hold some types, and keep them up and out of reach of small children. Other lamps will hang from the ceiling.
The pictured Cranberry Lamp was found with the spider arms cut off the under-burner tripod shade ring which was originally attached to the burner and Gallery. It now has a brand new burner, and sets at the top of our Secretary. The Font of this lamp is made to set into a wall bracket or hanging holder. With the simple addition of a Shade Holder, this lamp could be made more elegant with a Glass Shade.
Under burner tripod & shade rings are the easiest to replace by unscrewing the burner, centering the shade ring on the font & screwing the burner back in place. The under burner ring holder offers the most support. Tripod holders have 3 wire spider like arms or fingers that are typically mounted on the gallery of the lamp burner, but some mount under burner. Those that sit on the gallery will be a very snug fit and most likely require you to start on the lip of the gallery & evenly snug into place with a pair of padded pliers, so you won’t damage the finish.

Lamps from the Civil War Era may be Gone with the Wind style. Their holders are much smaller, just a narrow ring, and require a Gwtw Ball Shade with an open top. Others may require Gas Style Shades.
There are many sizes and styles of Clear Chimneys or Frosted Chimneys on the market, made to fit different types of lamp burners. Since they are easily broken, it’s a good plan to have spares wrapped and stored safely with your emergency supplies.
